Being a student Spanish in Buenos Aires, I am always looking out for new and exciting off-the-touristical-path-places to visit, preferible which will leave some pesos in my wallet. After I leave my Spanish language school http://www.expanish.com/ in the afternoon, I stroll around to find that new cool coffee house or place to see. Here are some of my favorites things to do and places to see.

My Spanish language course friends at Expanish: http://www.expanish.com/

Budget places to eat

When it comes to stuff your belly it is good to know where to go in a big city as Buenos Aires. Some places where you get yummie dishes for not too many pesos are: Las Cabras - Good meat from the parilla and nice informal atmosphere. Chan chan - Peruvian restaurant. Good to try Ceviche, a delicious Peruvian national dish of raw fish. Bangalore - Good Indian cuisine! La Fabrica del taco - Spice it up with some Mexican food. Buenos nachos! La Americana - However there are a lot of Italian immigrants, I find it hard to get good pizza. This is one of the best I found so far. They have a lot of variety and good taste! Another place is Siamo nel Forno, which has “Pizza Napolitana” neonlights in the front. They have interesting pizzas. Worth a try!

Steak at Las Cabras

Coffee time

However a lot of people drink mate in Argentina, others need a cup of coffee to keep on moving. Some good spots to get the black motor are: Café Tortoni – This is the oldest café in the city and still has a great authentic atmosfere. Besides coffee this cafe also has a great submarine hot chocolate! Don Julio - A good parilla, but they have great coffee too! El Gato Negro – A classic in Buenos Aires. Las Violetas – This elegant place has lead glass church windows and gateways, French stained glass windows and Italian style marble floors. Los Angelitos - Nice cafe from the glory days. Café De García – Another old style café. Café Giralda – They have good churros with chocoloate to accompany your coffee.

Café Tortoni

To do

Chacarita cemetary- however everybody goes to Recoleta cemetary, this cemetary has some pretty exciting things to see as well. For instance it is the home to the grave of Carlos Gardel, the man who made tango popular under the more wealthy people in Buenos Aires. Chacarita cemetary was build out of pure necesity when the yellow fever hit Buenos Aires in 1871 and burries thousands and thousands of people. You know that medical students collect bones there, since the fake ones at the University are too expensive…

Chacarita cemetery

Cycle to Tigre - Get your friends together and go for a cycling trip to Tigre, where you can enjoy the river view with a picknick, go for a boat ride and see amazing houses or chill out at one of the river beaches. Not to fond about cycling? The train is only 1 pesos! For more information visit: http://www.tigre.gov.ar/turismo/

Tea time – If you want to experience the grandeur from the old days, go for a late afternoon high tea at the Alvear Palace. Other nice places to get a cup of tea and some treats are Sirop http://siroprestaurant.com/home.html, Pierina Tea House http://www.pierinateahouse.com.ar, Porota http://porota.com/, tealosophy http://www.tealosophy.com/eng/eng.html and Arkakao http://www.arkakao.com.ar/ (also yummie icecreams!).

Milonga – Try tango dancing in a milonga. La Catedral is an admirable underground milonga with amazing paintings on the wall http://www.lacatedralclub.com/ Other milongas which welcome beginners as well are Laviruta http://www.lavirutatango.com/, Tangocool http://www.tangocool.com/ and La Marshall (gay-friendly) http://www.lamarshall.com.ar/.

Reserva Ecologica – Go for a picknick or some exercise to the Ecological Reserve Costanera Sur. There are moonlight tours organized once per month. http://www.buenosaires.gov.ar/areas/med_ambiente/reserva/

Reserva Ecologica Costanera Sur, Buenos Aires

La Bomba de Tiempo – This drum spectacle is every monday and sometimes on holidays. Get a liter of beer and loosen up your hips.

Markets – Besides the popular San Pedro market in San Telmo every sunday, there are some other interesting markets worthwile a visit. A real gaucho market is Feria de Mataderos http://www.feriademataderos.com.ar/feria.htm and Feria artensenal in Belgrano is a good place to buy some arty stuff. Mercado de las Pulgas is a good market to score some vintage stuff for your home.

Gauchos at feria de Mataderos, Buenos Aires

Walk through barrios – Go for a stroll through different barrios is definitely the best way to really get to know a city. My favorites are Palermo and Villa Crespo, since they are full of street art. Graffiti is accepted as a form of art here, so you will find the most beautiful wallt paintings in Buenos Aires.

Going on vacation is expensive—airfare, gasoline prices, and the cost of accommodations all add up quickly. One area where travelers can cut costs without cutting the quality of a vacation is in the meal department. Here are some dining tips that can help vacationers save money painlessly.

Choose Accommodations with a Kitchen or Kitchenette

Travelers can save a considerable amount of money on meals if they stay in a timeshare or home rental that features an onsite kitchen or a kitchenette. Even some hotel rooms now feature a little kitchen area with at least a microwave and a refrigerator. Cooking meals in a room is much cheaper than constantly going out to eat at expensive restaurants. In addition, travelers can keep milk, sodas, snacks, microwavable meals, as well as leftovers in their fridge. Sometimes, it’s those little $2 sodas and waters that can make or break a travel budget.

Select Accommodations that Offer Free Breakfast or Happy Hour

A number of hotels offer free breakfasts with their rooms. This is a good way to cut down on having to pay for at least one meal during the day. Travelers should check around before deciding on a hotel that offers a free breakfast. Some facilities offer elaborate spreads with hot choices, such as bacon and eggs, while the “free breakfast” of other places consists of a few boxes of cold cereal and juice. So it’s always best for travelers to compare prices and services before deciding on a hotel.

Some hotels also offer free happy hours with wine, soda and snacks. While this may not be enough to replace an entire meal, these little happy hours can at least put a dent in a traveler’s appetite.

Split Meals in Restaurants

Many restaurants today serve huge portions that are enough to feed two people. Before ordering, diners should take a look around to get an idea of a restaurant’s portion sizes, and then split a meal if the servings are large. This may sound like a no-brainer, but it is surprising how often people are shocked by the size of their portions when their food arrives. A peek at a fellow diner’s meals before ordering should eliminate this type of surprise and also help save money in the long run.

Social Media Site Discounts

Social media sites such as Living Social and Groupon offer great deals on meals. These sites allow travelers to purchase vouchers, which are usually good for about 50 percent off of a meal or whatever the deal of the day is. To take advantage of these bargains, travelers should sign up for these services for the town or area they plan on visiting well in advance of their planned vacation time. These sites will then send notices of the daily deals they are offering in those areas to the traveler. This is also an excellent way for travelers to discover new restaurants that they may not have found on their own.

These are just a few of the ways savvy travelers can save money on meals while on vacation without feeling like they’re compromising the quality of their vacation.

You may believe that going on holiday is expensive, but there is a way in which you can go on a break without having to pay a single penny. Wild camping is where you pitch a tent on a campsite free of charge, where, depending on where you’re camping UK wide, you can do a number of activities in the surrounding area. To accommodate people interested in wild camping, there are a handful of camping sites in the UK which cater for them.

One of the best places to enjoy this form of cheap camping offered by PitchuUp.com is the Dernwood Farm Wild Camping site near Heathfield in East Sussex. For those of you who like the idea of a free holiday, this site is perhaps the best place to go wild camping in the entire South East of England. Set on a farm, the site is tucked in dense woodland, and you could go tree climbing or wildlife spotting while you’re there. As for food, the farm shop has everything you could need for cooking over a campfire during a clear evening.

Rathlin Island Wild Camping is set on the beautiful Rathlin Island of the coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland. The island itself is a peaceful place which is just made for camping, while you’re not short of places to go walking, if that’s your thing. If not, you can go fishing on the coast.

The North West Highlands is home to Sheigra Wild Camping, which is in the village of Kinlochbervie. Here, free of charge, you can walk along the mountains, take some photos of the stunning scenery or, if you’re feeling a little lazy, stay at your campsite and spot some of the local wildlife. The money you’ll save from paying for a pitch could be spent at one of the local pubs if you fancy sampling some of the local tipples or cuisine.

Anyone who travels frequently, or who travels for vacation, probably understands how much more enjoyable a trip is when the trip is well suited for traveling with pets. Preparing for a trip—especially an international trip—requires considerable advance planning. People who travel with pets also need to deal with potential issues before beginning the trip.

Make Sure Your Dog is Healthy
In addition to purchasing temporary medical insurance to ensure against unexpected health problems, and possibly going to see your physician if you have a health condition that may be exacerbated by traveling, the American Kennel Association advises people to take their dog to the vet for a thorough checkup before going on a vacation, especially before an extended trip.
Dogs need to be current on all of their shots prior to a trip, and dog-owners should carry records of those vaccinations with them. Airlines require health certifications, and a trip to the vet can provide you with all of the necessary certifications and documents.
To guarantee that your dog stays healthy on the trip, make sure you bring a supply of the dog’s regular food. A trip is not the time to experiment with new foods; especially if you don’t have something on hand you know the dog will eat. Also bring bottled water, just in case there are problems with water at your destination, and all medications your dog regularly takes.

Have a Proper Travel Crate for the Dog
The New York Times stresses the importance of having the proper pet carrier. People who travel with pets would be wise to purchase a carrier from a company with a solid reputation, because those companies sometimes guarantee that they will refund the full cost of an airline flight and the pet fee, if the passenger is denied boarding due to the carrier.

Be Prepared for Huge Pet Charges on Commercial Airlines
Commercial airlines are now charging substantially more than they used to charge travelers to bring pets on board. Most of the major airlines charge an additional $100 for children who are traveling alone, but the fee they charge for pets is more than that, and it varies, depending on whether or not the dog is small enough to fit into the cabin.

Send the Dog on Pet Airways
Pet Airways offers convenience for pet owners who want to ensure that their dog is properly cared for on a long trip. Flight attendants board the pets and personally check on them every 15 minutes. In addition, animals are given regular potty breaks. Pet owners pick up their pets at the Pet Lounge of their destination after the dog has had another potty break.
The disadvantage, at least for now, is the fact that Pet Airways only travels to a handful of destinations, including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, New York, Omaha, Phoenix and the Washington DC/Baltimore area. On the other hand, people who are traveling with dogs may want to look into the list of destinations to which Pet Airways travels.

Send Fido on His Own Vacation
For people who can’t bring their dog with them, there are upscale kennels that are equipped with everything from bone-shaped wading pools to pet cams that allow pet owners to log on to the Internet to watch their dog as they play. For example, at Best Friends Pet Care Inc., a chain that owns 42 pet-boarding centers in 19 states throughout the United States, guests can enjoy extra goodies like milk and cookies for cats and chewy treats for dogs, and V.I.P. suites that have web cams and flat screen televisions for your pet.
For anyone who travels with his or her pet, making travel plans long before the trip is essential. The only way to know whether accommodations are pet-friendly, and whether they have suitable space available, is to make your reservations early. Take the time to find dog-friendly amenities in the destination to which you are traveling. The trip will be more enjoyable for everyone if your dog has the opportunity to run around and play and enjoy the trip, too. Safe travels to you and your pet!

Travelling is both about discovering surprising quirky local specialties as well as common habits prevalent throughout certain countries, both of which are enjoyable and make up the finer memories of our trips abroad. This post is about the prevalent habits that we will often know about and that are common to certain countries, and are often something we will look forward to observing and enjoying when we reach our intended destination. Specifically, it’s about 5 drinking habits around the world which vary immensely, and it is because of this variation that we can travel on our taste buds, experiencing what we otherwise wouldn’t really order or sample at home. Sometimes when we think about a location, we draw up various stereotypes, that although they may have some truth in them, we find out on arrival that the locals don’t do it as much as we thought. Or when we get there, the locals don’t really do it at all, but the travelling scene is thriving off of it. The following 5 drinking habits are a mixture of these two scenarios.

Photo by Kullez – Buckets are a common way of drinking in Thailand’s livelier locations

America: Light Beer

Light beer is confusing to most travellers on arrival. Is it diet beer? Is it weaker alcoholically than normal beer? Well in truth it’s usually both. Most of the time, it’s like a diet beer, so for the calorie counters you will feel at home here. Reducing the calories usually requires reducing the alcoholic content as well, so if you’re looking to consume one beer then great, but if you’re having a bit of a night out, then you will not be getting the normal effect from drinking light beer as it will have less alcohol in it. A popular option is Bud Light, which at 4.2% is lower than normal Budweiser. This is great if you’re looking to watch your belly on your travels, perhaps saving a trim paunch for the beach, and can help you reduce your alcoholic content should you wish. Light beer does carry with it the reputation of being light on taste as well, with many foreigners finding this popular American beer a bit watery compared to what they are used to. But you’re travelling, and trying something different is what you’re here for, and some people are likely to find they prefer the different price.

South Pacific: Kava

Kava is a traditional drink served throughout the South Pacific that is regularly drunk by the locals and often integral to many celebrations and festivals. It is made in a large wooden bowl from ground up roots of the piper methstyicum plant and is known as a mild sedative that creates a social, amicable scene. For travellers, you’re unlikely to instantly be a fan of the muddy taste, but the authentic experience of sitting in a circle with Fijian villagers and drinking Kava whilst whiling away the hours is one not to be missed.

Australia: Goon

If you meet any travellers heading the opposite way on your journey to Australia, then they are likely going to regale you with stories of the convenient attributes of ‘Goon.’ For many, Australia is currently an expensive country and many currencies don’t have a favourable exchange rate, this is where Goon steps up to the plate. Cheap and sold in large quantities, Goon is white wine (more popular) or red wine. Do not walk into a shop looking for products saying Goon on them, as this is slang. Instead, Goon is sold in boxes with plastic pouches and a tap, convenient for quick and copious pouring, and some attempt at marketing it as a normal wine. However, it is generally of low grade and can contain fish and eggs. The taste to many is bad, but there seems to be a limitless list of mixing agents to fix this, a few favourites include pineapple juice and soda water. Despite the bad taste, few would dispute that it leads to great memories, should you still have them the next morning.

England : Lager versus Ale

Despite having one of the longest standing, age old traditions of brewing beer anywhere in the world, the English drinking scene doesn’t revolve mainly around the bitters, ales and stouts the country is known for. Rather, if you venture out on the night scene in the larger cities in the UK there will be many continental cold lagers favoured by the younger generation from countries such as Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy and from the other side of the pond USA and Mexico. This lively party scene is well known the world over, but travellers looking for something authentic to the country will be pleased that there are many breweries and pubs specialising in local English Ales that offer an incredible range and unique repertoire of flavours and ingredients.

Thailand: Buckets

This habit is less a popular drink, and more a popular drinking method. Travellers know that Thailand thrives off the constant flow of travellers, with some appreciating being in the beating heart of the travel community whilst others are more wary of visiting here. Nonetheless, the bucket is ubiquitous in Thailand’s tourist hotspots, and conveniently cheap. Restaurants and street stalls sell buckets filled with cocktails of spirits such as vodka and mixers such as red bull (in its home, Thailand) and cola, which is then consumed from the bucket with a straw if you want. Local shops have also got in on the action and sell buckets with little bottles of spirits and mixers inside. This style of drinking is conducive to the lively party scene found throughout Thailand.

There are places that leave an indelible mark in your heart when you visit. In most cases it’s the people, environment or the activities that you get to do there that makes you want to keep coming back, the place that you associate with good memories or good times.

For me, that place is the Kenyan Coast, to be specific Malindi town. It’s the unique destination that I turn to when I simply want to get away from the hustle and enjoy myself. Tourists know about the beauty of the Kenyan coast but most people only get to visit Mombasa, the bigger brother of Malindi with more hotels and closer to the capital city Nairobi than the rest of the coastal towns.

Malindi holds a special place in my heart because it has a lot to offer for someone like me who simply wants to relax and avoid the fast life.

The town has myriad of attractions that would make anyone want to come back after visiting. The weather which is mostly warm is excellent for anyone who wants to take advantage of the several beaches, but the best part about Malindi beaches is that because it is a small town, the beaches are never crowded and they are always clean.

Even the public beaches like the Marine Park beach which is the most popular never has a huge traffic of people that would limit you having a pleasant time at the beach. I love taking long walks on the beach especially during the sunset. The scenes are simply breathtaking and would make anyone unwind.

At night, there are several clubs that you can visit to dance and make new friends. Since, the town is small you can move from one club to another by walking. People are always walking on the streets at night especially during the weekend making it safe. What makes Malindi stand out according to me, is the availability of accommodation for anybody visiting at a convenient price. Malindi has several resorts and villas that lie along the beach and offer guests excellent services. The fact that they have many options for accommodation makes it great because I can always choose an accommodation package that suits me. If you do not get an accommodation package that includes meals, then there are several restaurants that offer different cuisines for visitors.

The meals mostly include sea food that is cheap because of the availability. Swahili food made by the locals is also served in most of the restaurants. The other thing that makes Malindi my favourite place to visit is the fact that I do not have to worry about transport. The shops, restaurants, night clubs and even the resorts are all found within the same location. You can simply walk from one place to another. If not, or if you fancy something a little more fancy, you can take tuktuks that are available everywhere, they drop people door to door. If you are new to the town most of the drivers know the places within Malindi and are always very willing to help.

I highly recommend a visit, and I honestly believe that once you get the bug for this town you will return again and again.

You’ve been to the Bahamas and the Caribbean so many times the bartender practically knows your name. Hawaii was fun once, but you want an island destination with an exotic flair and a culture that’s different from that in the United States. Perhaps it’s time to consider a vacation on one of the many islands that dot the Indian Ocean.

About the Islands of the Indian Ocean
Located between the southeast coast of Africa and the west coast of Australia, the Indian Ocean comprises nearly 20 percent of the world’s water surface. This vast body of water is also home to a diverse collection of island nations, many of which offer spacious beaches, crystal-clear water and all of the privacy you could ask for. Below are just a few of the more popular Indian Ocean island destinations.

The Maldive Islands

Located about 400 miles southwest of Sri Lanka, the Maldives are an independent island nation made up of 1192 islands, 200 of which are inhabited. The islands offer more than 90 tourist resorts and hosts nearly more than 500,000 visitors each year. The Maldive Islands are served by the international airport in Mahe, with non-stop flights to Singapore, several cities in India and Dubai. There are also frequent charter flights from European capitals to the Maldives. U.S. and Canadian citizens need only a valid passport to enter the country.

The Seychelles

The Seychelles are located northeast of the island of Madagascar, about 1000 miles east of Kenya. This island nation, once governed by the French and later a British Crown Colony, is now an independent nation comprised of 155, mostly coral, islands. Only a handful of these islands are inhabited. Visitors to the Seychelles will find a French creole culture, despite the many years of British rule, and miles of relatively untouched, white sand beach. The islands are served by Seychelles International Airport near the capital city of Victoria on Mahe Island, with regular non-stop service to Nairobi, Johannesburg, Dubai and Doha Qatar, and Mauritius. No visa is needed for U.S. and Canadian citizens.

Mauritius

Mauritius is another island with mixed French and British history. This island sits about 400 miles due east of Madagascar and offers several luxury beach resorts. In fact, Mauritius was recently named as having the Best Beach at the World Travel Awards. Visitors to Mauritius fly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on the southeast side of the island. Regular, non-stop service is offered to more than two dozen cities around the globe, including Paris, London, Capetown, Zurich, Dubai and Hong Kong. A visa is not needed for tourists from the United States or Canada.

Madagascar

Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, is located off the coast of southern Africa. The island, once a Portuguese and French colony, is known for its bio-diversity and unique collection of plants and animals. In fact, more than 90 percent of the island’s animals are found nowhere else on earth. Visitors can reach Madagascar via flights from Nairobi, Paris and Johannesburg as well as chartered flights from several European cities. Visas are required of all foreign visitors and can be obtained at any Malagasy embassy or consulate before arrival. A valid passport is needed to get a visa.

Why not think a little out of the box this vacation season and venture to an exotic island paradise in the Indian Ocean?

New York City is one of the best cities in the world. The “City that never sleeps” as it’s often called welcomes thousands of tourists annually. People usually come here because there are countless things to do and see and they can never get bored. Walking on the large boulevards, seeing a show on Broadway, eating in a fine restaurant, climbing up the Empire State Building, anything visitors want, they can find here. Art, media, fashion, food and culture are all gathered in this magnificent metropolis.

Although New York is a wonderful city, it is also huge, thus people usually need a travel guide when they go there. The first thing visitors want to find out is how the weather is. New York features all 4 seasons and a continental climate. The summers and springs are humid and hot and the winters and autumns are cold and dry. So, the best time to visit this exceptional city is during the spring and summer. This way, the tourists can benefit from a nice weather while strolling around the 5th Avenue. Also, visitors should know that New Yorkers are very friendly people, so they will always be glad to help with any answer. The population is diverse and multi – cultural and sometimes the tourists can even meet with famous celebrities on the street. This is definitely an opportunity to be searched.

Tourists can get to New York by plane at one of the numerous airports, by boat or by train, bus or car from the other American states. Once in New York City, the visitors can choose to get around by foot, which is excellent if they want to discover the metropolis, but it’s not an alternative if they wish to see all the splendid attractions. The subways and buses are always a great alternative. People can get in an instant wherever they want. Tourists could also choose to get around by taxi, but they must know that’s more expensive than the public transit. Of course, there is always the option to rent a car or even a bicycle.

No matter how tourists choose to get around, they will certainly have a lot of fun while admiring some of the most impressive attractions in the world. When visiting some of New York’s most beautiful attraction, people have the option to choose a city pass like New York Pass, New York CityPASS and Explorer Pass. These will help them see the museums like Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History. With these passes they can also see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building or the Grand Central Terminal. The tourists who are into art and culture must not miss the theater shows on Broadway. There are dozens of them so people surely have where to choose from.

This is only a brief travel guide to New York City. There are many more to see and do in this spectacular metropolis. So, the best thing the tourists can do is to get on the plane and go see New York.

Santorini – Greek White Magic

Greece is a popular destination spot for most people looking to spend a magical and unforgettable time during the summer break. The well-known spots of Mykonos, Athens and Rhodes receive their fair share of tourists, and have some of the best luxury hotels and clubs, not forgetting city tours that showcase the Greek culture and people.

Destination Nouveau

Santorini is a little known island tourist destination that has recently caught the attention of holidaymakers. What makes this destination a hidden jewel are the white pristine villas and hotels perched atop a volcanic hillside, overlooking a vista of the shimmering Mediterranean, guaranteed to give the discerning holidaymaker an excellent view of sunrise and sunsets.

That’s not all – Santorini has gorgeous black sand beaches with warm waters, and hotels that cater to your every need and budget. Getting to the island is simple – a ferry or hydrofoil ride takes you to your destination in a little over an hour. The view as you approach the island, with its rocky outcrop and white villas is priceless, to say the least.

Getting There

Santorini is connected to Fira, the capital city, by a ferry ride, and this is where all partygoers meet up to have a taste of what the Greek island has to offer. The European-style clubs playing trance, techno and electronica music are sure to be a hit with the twenty-something year old crowd, and with a wide variety of eateries that are moderately priced, this region of Greece has something for everyone.

An Explosive History

Santorini is one of the Cyclades groups of islands and lies in the southern Aegean Sea. This is a region that was known to experience vicious volcano eruptions. It is thought that the famous volcano eruption that occurred in 1650 BC virtually caused the centre of Strongili (modern day Santorini) to sink and give rise to the formation that is the base of the many whitewashed villas and hotels. The Minoan civilisation that was prevalent in this period vanished as a result of the eruption, according to speculation from research archaeologists.

Getting Around the Region

Oia has earned notoriety for being the place where the spectacular sunsets can be viewed, but if you want to avoid the crowds, a donkey ride through the cobblestone streets to the edge of the caldera, perched atop the hills, is the place to be.

If you’re planning on visiting Santorini in July and September, booking a hotel is absolutely mandatory, and hotels such as Perivolas and Katikies are great places to stay if you choose to go to Oia. If you would like to stay in Fira, the Enigma Apartments and suites are an excellent choice.

The island is compact and accessible, so getting from one point to another is easy and can be done in the least amount of time possible. Oia, Fira and Imerovigli have some of the best restaurants for your lunch and dinner plans, but be prepared to spend quite a bit if you’re thinking of eating at these spots.

Different Destination Choices for Different Folks

Another thing to note is the towns of Oia and Fira have distinct and different energies. For example, if you want a quiet holiday with a romantic edge and days spent lazing about the pool and beach, Oia is the place for you. If, however, you are looking to dance the nights away and don’t mind the tourist crush, Fira and Imerovigli should be your ideal choices.

Flight Information

Cheap flights to Santorini are available, and some airlines that fly this route include EasyJet, Thomson Flights and Aegean Airlines, among others. Take out your calendar and mark the beginning of summer, because Santorini awaits your presence.

The fact is the UK is every bit as enchanting as it appears to be, and has long been a favorite destination among world travelers.

Britain
Britain makes up the majority of the UK and does not fail to delight with all the available activities. Stonehenge is a huge tourist attraction and for good reason. Stonehenge is a monument of standing stones that was constructed somewhere between 3000 and 2000 BC. It is absolutely amazing. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is not a beach at all, but instead an amusement park set along the coastline. It is the most popular amusement park in the UK. Also not to be missed is a drive through Cotswolds which is said to be the most beautiful part of England.

In And Around London
London is the heartbeat of Great Britain and never fails to delight with its many attractions. Of course, you must see the famed Buckingham Palace where Prince William recently kissed his new bride Kate. The Changing of the Guards is an impressive ceremony you want to see while at Buckingham. Westminster Abbey is a church that is over a thousand years old. It is beautiful and a must see. Large portions of the King James Bible were translated at this very place. Looking for a more lighthearted touch? Try London Zoo or Lego land. London Zoo boasts over 760 different species of animals. Lego land is the place for children to go, with shows to see, Lego cars to ride in and of course, and endless legos to build with. If you want to take in the highlights in a hurry, one of London’s double decker bus tours are the way to go.

Scotland
Of course, there is more to the UK than Great Britain. Let’s move on to Scotland, where you will want to walk Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. This mile is full of Scottish culture, history and some of the greatest architecture in all of Scotland. You don’t want to miss the Falkirk Wheel, which will wow you with its engineering genius. There are boat rides available or you can stand by and simply watch the wheel in action. Blair Drummond Safari Park is a great activity for the whole family. You will enjoy riding through the animal exhibits and walking through the petting zoo portion. So large is the Blair Drummond Safari Park that a full day is recommended to enjoy it all.

Northern Ireland

You won’t be sorry you visited this part of the UK. Northern Ireland is home to the Mourne Mountains where you won’t only take in their majesty but also be entertained by all the fun activities offered there. Another breathtaking sight is the Portrush Whiterocks Beach with its limestone cliffs, white sand and turquoise waters. You will want to stay forever. Belfast is the destination you need to stop at to experience Titanic Belfast, where the Titanic was built.

There are some helpful tips you want to know before your visit to the UK. British Pounds are the common currency. If you are traveling on a budget, trains and buses are the cheapest way to travel. Natives of the UK love visitors and are sure to make you welcome. Enjoy your stay.

Radiocarbon dating has determined that the some of the oldest cave art to date is located in the Coliboaia Cave in Romania. This discovery provides more evidence in the on going debate regarding the intelligence of early humans. This is a must see site for anyone studying archaeology and early humans and only further reinforces the idea of the Ice Age art. To visit this location, you will need a passport, so apply for a same day US passport. To take full advantage of the cave, also consider adding pages to your passport in order to visit other prolific caves throughout Europe.

Coliboaia Cave

The Coliboaia Cave is located in Romania in the Apuseni Nature Park it was discovered on a routine spelunking trip by several Romanian caver clubs. They were exploring this cave using diving equipment when they spotted cave art. After initial discovery French experts lead by the leading cave art expert Jean Clottes make a trek to the cave and confirmed the ancient cave art. Apparently this cave as also discovered around thirty years ago, but at that time no cave art had been discovered. Due to it’s topography it’s a hard cave to manuever and is often flooded.

Cave Art

The cave art featured at the Coliboaia Cave is estimated to be about 32,000 years old. Radiocarbon dating determined that the early humans who created the cave art in Romania used a similar process to those who painted the art in the Western France Chauvet Cave, which furthers proves the overall unity and continuity of Ice age peoples cultural art presence. There were eight animal drawings that were above the water line found in the cave. Due to scratching as well as calcite build up some images were distorted however for the most part these images were untouched. There are also many images carved into the wall.

Cuciulat Cave

About thirty years ago the Cuciulat Cave was found in Romania, making the Coliboaia Cave the second cave featuring art in Romania. The Cuciulat Cave features drawings of two animals. Before the discovery of the Coliboaia Cave the Cuciulat Cave featured the oldest cave art estimated to be 12,000-25,000 years old. The Cuciulat Cave is located in the Transylvania region of Romania.

Significance

The Coliboaia Cave as well as other cave sites are very significant because they offer a glimpse into the intellect of early humans. They show a cultural continuity in regards to cave art. Clearly these peoples didn’t have communication, but each cave site and art was done by a different group, proving that there was a common interest in creating such art.

Romania features the Cuciulat Cave as well as the recently discovered Coliboaia site. These sites are both important in the discourse regarding cave art and early humans. Currently the Coliboaia site is being studied and more information will come to fruition. To visit Romania and the nature park that this site was found in make sure your passport is ready. Apply for a same day US passport if you do not have one. If you do have a passport that is unusually filled, consider adding pages to your passport to allow for further site seeing in other parts of Europe. Ancient cave art is a glimpse into the past and is truly an awe inspiring site to behold.

Passports

Passports are necessary documents when it comes to international travel. They allow an individual to travel to a foreign country as well as return to their country of origin. Passports are relatively easy to obtain now due to the internet and private agencies. Now a same day US passport can be ordered and other services are available such as adding pages to your passport or even a passport name change.

If you are looking to go on vacation to one of the dream cities in the US, you first need to have a plan. Understand that it is best to plan ahead and get your tickets and accommodation handled beforehand. This will allow you to save a good amount of money and still enjoy your trip. You will also need to choose a place that is near you yet still worth flying to. If you are serious about being able to have the best trip ever, you should really consider going to New York.

New York
A lot of people look at New York as the place for glitz and glamour but it is actually a great place to unwind. By looking at the nice views and simply walking around the city, you will realize that you can have a great time without your wallet. The nice parks and historic landmarks will have you taking pictures for hours. The flight may not be the cheapest but you will certainly find it to be very worth it.

Tourist Spots in New York
When you are in New York, you will need to visit quite a few places. However, there are a few spots that you simply cannot miss. Madison Square Garden would have to be the main place for basketball fans while Times Square would be the top spot for people that love entertainment and music. The Statue Of Liberty is most likely the best place for anyone that wants to see the true essence of New York. Whether it is the food, the people or the actual tourist spots, you will never find a place that will be just like New York.

Before you are able to get your trip to New York planned, you will need to focus on being able to get your ESTA US Visas ready. By filling out your ESTA Visa application, you will be able to get your ESTA US Visa ready. Most people who are looking to go on vacation will have trouble with trying to find a good place because they have no idea where to go. However, if you are looking to really find a cheap place to visit, then these are definitely the cities that you should check out. With just a small budget, you will still be able to enjoy everything that these cities have to offer you without ever making a dent in your wallet.

But there are several hidden gems in Alaska that are perfect for tourists looking for something a little off the beaten path, and these are four of them.

Hatcher Pass

Hatcher Pass by Flickr user Cecil Sanders

The pass is about an hour and a half drive north of Alaska’s largest city, where there are plenty of Anchorage hotels to stay at in between your journeys.

Enjoy the other tourist traps around the area, but make time for Hatcher Pass. It features unmatched scenery, including views of the Talkeetna Mountains, and excellent hiking trails. Of course, you can’t miss the 272-acre Independence Mine State Historical Park, an abandoned gold mine that makes for a great adventure.

Skagway, Alaska

Skagway, Alaska by Flickr user Thales

When the summer tourism season hits, hundreds of thousands are brought to Skagway – most because of cruises, others because of Alaska jobs. Cruise boats tower over the small town (whose population is under 1,000 when it’s not tourist season), but there’s plenty to see and do in and around Skagway.

In town, don’t miss the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, which commemorates the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s. Outside of town, Canada’s Yukon is a picturesque 65-mile drive away. And don’t miss the Yukon Suspension Bridge, which spans the Tutshi River.

Katmai National Park and Preserve & Brooks Camp

Bear in Katmai National Park by Flickr user BlackburnPhoto

Brooks Camp, inside Katmai National Park and Preserve, gives you a wonderful opportunity to see brown bears while you visit Alaska.

The park itself has the world’s largest protected brown bear population, and Brooks Camp has great viewing platforms (be prepared to take a “Bear Etiquette” training course). During the summer, the National Park Service operates a visitor center, with the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes nearby.

Katchemak Bay State Park

The very first state park of Alaska has 400,000 acres for you to explore. But be warned, no roads lead to the park – you can only get to Katchemak Bay State Park by airplane or boat.

Whether you’re there for hiking or camping, you’ll find bays, glaciers, lagoons, lakes and peaks to explore.

We’ve all heard of the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and the Navy Pier. And, while those attractions are great for a few visits, if you go to Chicago often, you’re more than ready for a less toursit-centered experience. The real Chicago lies beneath they typical sites and is far more spectacular than just another tourist “hot spot”.

Chicago Eats and Drinks

When traveling, almost everyone wants to try the local food. While many tourists hit up Gino’s Pizza and other deep dish restaurants, consider moving off the beaten path and eating with the locals.

The Lion Head Pub is a great college hangout where a younger crowd can enjoy lively entertainment on big screen plasma TVs with draught beers. This Irish pub offers great food and is a favorite for Chicago sports fans. With its relaxed atmosphere, the Lion Head Pub offers a glimpse into the lives of Chicagoans. Grab a drink and watch the Blackhawks or Cubs with the locals for some insights into Chicago culture and a great time.

The Bongo Room offers breakfast, brunch and lunch for those who want to test out something new and different. Try their Cranberry & Yellow Corn Hotcakes or Pumpkin Spice and Chocolate Chunk Cheesecake Flapjacks for breakfast. For those who don’t wake up until lunchtime, the Baby Spinach Golden Beet & Duck Confit Salad is a great choice. Chicago has long been known for its food, and some classic Windy City fare can be found at the Bongo Room.

Chicago Hotels

Similar to the restaurant choices, why stay at the typical tourist hotel with so many under-the-radar Chicago hotels? While the Palmer House and Drake offer classic Chicago architecture and amenities, they can often be filled with tourists. Check out one of these unique hotels on your trip to Illinois’ shining city:

The Wit Hotel, located in the center of downtown features beautifully decorated, spacious rooms and great amenities. One quirky feature is their wake-up call service compliments of area actors who imitate well-known people. It is a fantastic way to wake up. The Wit also has a fantastic downtown location with easy access to the train and in walking distance from great shopping.

The Hotel Indigo is not your typical hotel. Decorated in walls of painted irises, blueberries and other “indigo” items, the Hotel Indigo has a relaxing and calming atmosphere. The vibrant colors will energize and make one feel as if they are in another land. This modern hotel offers a great contrast to the traditional look of Chicago. Choosing the Hotel Indigo is a great way to experience both modern and classic features of Chicago.

Attractions & Shopping

Instead of heading to Chicago’s off-Broadway theater district, take in a show performed by 33rd St. Productions. Part of the Illinois Institute of Technology, this company performs several times a year. Recently they have performed Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The student production company draws locals from all over the city and offers high-class theater at a fraction of the price.

While the Adler Planetarium offers a unique look at the stars, the Northwestern University Dearborn Observatory is where you will find Chicagoans looking up to the skies. On Friday evenings the observatory opens to the public. The observatory dates back to the 1860s and has become part of Chicago’s history. This local feature is a great place to take in history and astrology while conversing with Chicago locals.

Don’t settle for touristy destinations when you visit Chicago. Research local student sites and Chicago travel blogs to find out where the tourists are and where the locals hang out. Visiting a few common areas like the John Hancock Building and the Magnificent Mile won’t hurt – you might even learn a bit about Chicago at these classic tourist spots. Just make sure to take in some quirky sites to truly appreciate Chicago’s culture and beauty.

When you go on a luxury holiday you expect the very best; the best food, the best room and undoubtedly an amazing pool to relax in. But some things man just can’t do quite so well as mother nature.

So if you want a truly sublime and out of this world swimming experience, check out these 5 natural swimming locations.

The Homestead Crater

This almost underground crater was created 10,000 years ago. The opening in the roof allows the sunlight to stream in with an eerie glow and the water is naturally heated underground.

The Pools of Pamukkale

This natural wonder is truly astonishing to behold. The site is made up of a series of pools forming a terrace on a mountain side. Over thousands of years water high in minerals has flowed down the mountain and built dozens of crystalline pools at the same time. They aren’t really big enough to swim in, but the minerals do wonders for your skin.

The Fairy Pools

On the isle of sky, the Fairy pools aren’t always that warm, but it is worth taking a trip in summer time to marvel at the beautiful blue waters and if you’re brave taking a dip. It’s very refreshing.

The Blue Lagoon

Iceland is known for its geothermal energy and the Blue Lagoon is the best way to enjoy the benefits. The large natural pool is naturally heated to around 98 Fahrenheit and many people say it has healing properties. Either way it is very luxurious.

The Devil’s Pool

Finally, in Africa at the Victoria Falls we find the most surprising and perhaps terrifying pool of all. The Devil’s Pool is a natural infinity pool on the edge of the falls which is only visible during the dry season. Despite its position it is perfectly safe to swim in and the view is stunning.

If you are brave you can even peer over the edge of the infinity pool for an unparalleled view of the water cascading down the falls and into the river below.

Summary

All of these pools are stunning and wonderful in completely different ways, from the peaceful and serene to the down right bizarre. Wherever you go in the world there will likely be such wonders to behold, so whilst you are relaxing in your hotel pool, remember how much natural wonder there is still to be explored.

With thanks to Bristolairportparking.co.uk

Cape Town

Not only is Cape Town South Africa’s most popular destination, it is also considered the continent’s most popular tourist destination. The historic city, nicknamed the Mother City, boasts many revered attractions such as Table Mountain National Park, the Cape Floristic Region (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), famous beaches, and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

Caves of Gauteng Province

Dubbed as the Cradle of Humankind, this area is an archaeological treasure trove. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the caves contained some of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered; some date back 3.5 million years ago. The famed Sterkfontein Caves contained more than one third of the early hominid fossils ever discovered, including the world-famous Australopithecus

africanus. The recently built Maropeng Visitors Center is the ideal place to begin an exploration of the area.

Kruger National Park

One of Africa’s largest game reserves, this world-famous park is situated on 7,523 square miles. Occupying a north-east section of the country, Kruger National Park is home to lions, elephants, African wild dogs, leopards, giraffes, African buffalo, and many more large and small fauna as well as a large variety of flora. The park is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.

Durban’s Golden Mile

The city of Durban offers many attractions, but its Golden Mile, a stretch of beaches, is world-renowned for its golden sands, surfing scene, nightlife, and restaurants. Popular among vacationers, the beaches of the Golden Mile boast warm waters that are protected by shark nets and lifeguards.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this famous park includes many natural attractions such as the St. Lucia Game Reserve, St. Lucia Marine Reserve, False Bay Park, Sodwana Bay National Park, and Lake Etrza Nature Reserve. With its diverse biodiversity, the entire region is treasured for its beauty. Hippos, Nile crocodiles, and black rhinos are among the fauna that make their home in the park.

Museums of Johannesburg

The city of Johannesburg has many attractions, but its various museums are among the city’s most culturally rich venues. When visiting Johannesburg, be sure to check out the Mandela Museum, the Hector Pieterson Museum, the Apartheid Museum, and the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

Kimberley and the Big Hole

Boasted to be the largest hole ever excavated by hand, the Big Hole, also known as the Kimberley Mine, has been associated with diamonds for the last 150 years. Digging began in 1871 and lasted in earnest until 1914; over this span of the time, the mine produced more than six thousand pounds of diamonds. Today, Kimberley’s historic mine is a major tourist attraction that features buildings and relics from the mine’s heyday as well as shopping venues that cater to every taste.

Pretoria

Nicknamed the Jacaranda City, Pretoria is famous for its purple-blossomed trees as well as its museums and botanical garden. As the administrative capital of the country, Pretoria features many historic buildings and monuments. Be sure to check out such favorite venues as the Transvaal Museum, the Pretoria National Botanic Gardens, and the city’s zoo. Cultural attractions such as ballets, operas, and musical performances are also part of the city’s appeal.

Winelands

The nation’s winelands, located to the east of Cape Town, attract many visitors with their promise of enchanting vistas and wine-tasting events. Touring the vineyards and wineries is a favorite pastime among visitors to this part of South Africa. The tours often include popular examples of seventeenth-century Dutch architecture, too.

Robben Island

A symbol of the fight for civil rights, Robben Island is famous as the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The island had historically been used as a prison since the middle of the seventeenth century. Due to the volatile nature of its surrounding sea, it has also been the site of many shipwrecks. Today, Robben Island is a World Heritage Site and travelers come from far and wide to visit its museum and see the place where Nobel Laureate and South African President served much of his sentence for anti-apartheid activities.

It is nothing new that the Roman Colosseum stands out as one of the man-made wonders! But, can you believe that this wonderful monument was once a fun place to kill thousands of innocent men and women in combat? Yes, criminals, slaves, or people who lost their citizenship were victims of these funeral games. The gladiators had sworn an agreement that they would surrender themselves to any kind of torture or even death by their masters if they do not perform well in the fight.

These so-called “gladiator games” came into existence in 264 B.C in Rome. When Junius Brutus passed away, his sons matched three pairs of gladiators to honor their father’s death. What started as a way to honor the death of an aristocratic man later became a game of pride! And the Roman Colosseum provided a platform for all these funeral games. To create more interest among the spectators, cages and dens with hungry wild beasts were later added to the Colosseum.

Well, if you consider this practice as brutal, Romans viewed at it in a different way. For them, mere slaughtering of men wasn’t just enough! But, they wanted people to suffer while in combat with equally strong people and beasts before one of the competent died.

Most of the fights were held among powerful gladiators, and at times men and beasts were made to clash too. Also, there have been times when a person was unexpectedly thrown into the fighting arena. The reason could be that this unknown person might have irritated the emperor in the past or just that the emperor did not like the way he behaved in the Colosseum. Wild beasts, such as tigers, leopards, and lions were brought from various countries and hidden beneath the fighting area! The cages were then opened anytime during the fight when the spectators and the gladiators least expected it. When the gladiator gets the support of the crowd and the emperor, he/she will be set free.

Having discussed the historical significance of the Roman Colosseum, don’t you want to visit this Italy tourist attraction?

Morocco was one destination that I wanted to visit for a number of years. After watching old movies like Casablanca and Laurence of Arabia, I fell in love with the culture and old colonial feel from that part of the world. There was something rather romantic about exploring the ancient walled cities and I could already imagine the smell of incense filling the narrow alleyways of the souks and night markets.

After telling my girlfriend about my idealistic break in Morocco, she caught the bug as well and we booked two tickets to Marrakech for a long weekend from Friday until the following Monday in August.

Arriving at the airport, we could take a bus to the city centre, but with no previous experience of this place we decided to get a taxi and showed the driver where we needed to go. We realised that it was a good idea to print off a map showing the route from the airport to the boutique hotel where we were staying, which was more to do with luck than judgement.

But there was a second reason I wanted to take a taxi. I love seeing the hustle and bustle of new, unfamiliar cities and street level. It’s the first impression you will get so it should be a good one in my opinion. As we drove through the new developments we finally reached the old city where the streets winded narrowly between rustic buildings. The first thing that struck me was the colour of everything, like a rich orange, warm and inviting.

Needless to say, the traffic in Morocco is chaotic with the bravest driver getting right of way. We brushed past other vehicles and swerved through crowds of pedestrians, who seemed to time their walk across the road perfectly so they wouldn’t get hit by oncoming traffic. It was entertaining to say the least and, although I had similar experiences in other destinations like Mombasa and Egypt, Morocco seemed to win the prize for the most daring passenger experience.

The driver stopped and explained that we needed to continue the rest of the journey on foot down an alleyway flanked by market stalls. We paid him and exited the car only to be greeted by a group of children willing to carry our bags and take us to our hotel, at a price of course, sort of like an unofficial concierge.

One child asked where we were staying in broken English and excitedly declared that he knew exactly where to go. He picked up our bag and signalled us to follow him without a reply from us. I looked at my girlfriend with a shrug as if to say, ‘this is it darling, our holiday is in this kids hands’ which was answered with a roll of the eyes from her.

A two minute walk later and we were standing in front of a big, heavy looking wooden door. Our self-volunteered baggage handler and temporary guide held out his hand awaiting his reward. It was at this point that I wished I had some small change on me, but all I had were notes of 10 and 20 dirhams. I begrudgingly handed over 10 dirhams to the kid who thanked me with a bow and pottered off the way we came. I couldn’t help but feel a little robbed within the first 20 minutes of our arrival but I only had myself to blame.

The Riad

We rang the buzzer to our supposed hotel and, with a sigh of relief, were answered by the concierge… the official one this time. Introducing ourselves, we had a bit of paper work to fill out and then we were ready to settle down.

In booking our accommodation, we had decided to stay at a riad, which is a kind of boutique hotel. It had a very unique, cosy style with a mish-mash of furniture and decorations which seemed to resemble an art nouveau feel. I have recommended staying in a riad to everyone I talk to about Morocco. The service was very personal with a friendly atmosphere and almost felt like a home from home.

You wouldn’t be able to tell that the riad was in the middle of the hustle and bustle, but once the front door was closed, it was like entering another world. We were greeted by a lush courtyard populated with colourful finches that chirped away in the towering palm trees and played in the water fountain standing in the middle of a mosaic floor. The sound of falling water and the shade from the trees provided cool respite from the blazing midday sun.

The riad courtyard

As we entered our room we were greeted with a breeze from the wide open windows with slatted shutters, overlooking the small pool which was in a neighbouring courtyard. It all seemed very intimate and I couldn’t help feeling that we made the right decision staying here rather than a modernised hotel.

The Night Market

After familiarising ourselves with our accommodation and meeting some of the other residents, we decided to venture out into the city and explores the souks. It was reaching dinner time and the sun was setting making it bearable to walk out in the open.

The night market is a must-see when visiting Marrakech and has featured on many a ‘before you die’ list. It was a simple walk to get there from the riad, down the main road, which tested our traffic dodging skills. We could see the Koutoubia, the city’s main mosque, lit up in the distance which acted as a beacon for the market.

Looking down on the night market

We reached the main square, mainly by following other tourists, and were bought in by the smells of the food market along with the sounds of whirling dervishes and snake charmers.

Walking through the markets will subject you to a bit of banter from the stall owners, but it’s all in good humour and isn’t as aggressive as other destinations such as Tunisia or even Egypt. You can easily brush off a merchant looking to barter with you, only to be greeted by another.

We decided to enter the rabbit warren that was the souk, a winding labyrinth of the market network. It’s easy to get lost in here and is almost encouraged, as you will enter through one end of the square only to emerge on the other side half an hour later.

Navigating the souks

It’s easy to notice a trend in what the market is selling, whether its leather products like hand-made bags and shoes, to the more sensory goods like incense and spices. This resulted in a pleasant ambient smell as we strolled through the crowd.

After familiarising ourselves with the market we decided to grab something to eat at one of the many food stalls which was a fairly ad hoc affair. We sat down on a long table alongside other diners with their food overflowing as they shared with each other. The menu comprised mainly of seafood, which wasn’t my girlfriends favourite, but she made the most of it. We also received a complementary bottle of water which was welcomed as the evening air was still warm.

After we finished, it was a lazy walk back to the riad to hit the hay with the air conditioning on.

Essaouira

During our stay, my girlfriend had the idea planted in her head that we should go to Essaouira, a seaside town on the Atlantic coast, for a day. To avoid any chastising whilst on holiday I agreed to get up at stupid o’clock and go with her on the coach.

The coach station was located right next to the train station in the new city and, like the ignorant tourists we were, we got our tickets with a bit of loud, slow-talking English and made-up sign language. We ended up just repeating ‘Essaouira’ at the ticket desk whilst holding up two fingers. Mission accomplished. We had two tickets to Essaouira and we looked far too proud of our achievement despite the haphazard approach.

The coach journey was just under 3 hours and ventured through rural Morocco. It’s a nice scenic drive, but the landscape doesn’t change enough to deserve undivided attention, so I read a book for most of the way.

When we arrived, I couldn’t help but feel that the sea air made Essaouira a bit chilly and overcast. It was nice to be on the beach for a day but it certainly wasn’t sun bathing weather.

The city itself was a contrast from the warm oranges and reds of Marrakech, instead comprising mainly of white and blues. This is where the contrasts end however as the atmosphere and culture is still very much the same.

Keeping my distance from the camels

It was nice to see another side of Morocco, but unless you want to spend a whole day, I would give Essoauira a miss as it is very samey to Marrekech, only on a smaller scale. After deciding against a camel ride, out of sheer fright of the monstrous animals, we decided to get the coach back in the afternoon in time for dinner.

The Food

You may already have an idea of what the food is like in Morocco. A lot of it is spicy dishes cooked with a tagine, a ceramic pot traditional for the region. You will however notice some westernised restaurants catering to tourists as a novelty.

It’s a culinary experience for the adventurous foodie to say the least, but is well worth the endeavour. I enjoy all kinds of food so I was happy to taste the different tagines on offer in the various cafes and restaurants we tried, which vary in many ways, usually coming with lamb or chicken and a variety of cous cous.

The best tagine we had however, and probably the best I ever had, was eaten at our riad on the last night, which augmented my reasoning for staying there further. It was a set menu of lamb tagine with dates which just fell apart after being slowly cooked. The cous cous was light and fluffy with the tang of apricots and a hint of coconut, bringing a sweet and savoury sensation together effortlessly.

When staying in Morocco, you should also try the mint tea at least once, if not to cool down, then to experience the refreshment on its own. There’s something quite theatrical about having a pot of mint tea delivered to your table and poured into a cut glass to sip.

Heading Home

The experience of Marrakech was everything that I had hoped for and felt like a box I could tick off. The heat and the vibrancy made it feel like an adventure and I couldn’t help thinking that this destination had become a popular choice for city breaks rather than the regular holiday.

Spending more than a few days in Marrakech could become a bit samey, unless you venture into the desert for a few days or visit some of the neighbouring towns and cities. It’s an experience rather than a holiday, but I would definitely return in a year or two to savour the sights, sounds and tastes.

South Africa does not only feature very diverse landscapes, it is also home to people from many different backgrounds. A great mix of cultures, traditions and religions can be found here which resulted in a unique way of life and food items having established here.

In order to really get to know South Africa, visitors should try the below listed items which are missed mostly by South Africans living abroad:

Biltong

Drywors

Crème Soda

Niknaks

Mrs Balls Chutney

Peppermint crisp

Boerewors

Rusks

Maize meal

Tennis biscuits

Biltong is a kind of cured meat which originates from South Africa. Different types of meat are used in its production including beef and ostrich. Biltong is typically made from raw fillets of meat. South Africa’s biltong is similar to beef jerky as they are both spiced, dried meats, but differ in their typical ingredients, taste and production process; biltong does not have a sweet taste.

Drywors, referred to as droëwors in Afrikaans, is a popular South African snack. It is dried quickly in warm, dry conditions. Droëwors does not contain curing agent as found in a traditional cured sausage. A direct result of this is that droëwors should not be kept in moist conditions as mold can begin to form more easily than would happen with a cured sausage.

Boerewors is a sausage which is very popular in South African cuisine. Boerewors is based on an older traditional Dutch sausage. It is made from coarsely minced beef, sometimes combined with minced pork and lamb as well as spices. Boerewors contains a high proportion of fat, and is preserved with vinegar and salt.

South Africa’s cream soda is a sweet soft drink which is carbonated, usually it is flavored with vanilla. Ninaks, tennis biscuits, rusks and peppermint crisps make for a great snack and are loved by young and old in South Africa.

Mrs Balls Chutney accompanies many meals of South African as it is a brand loved by many, with roots firmly planted in South African heritage.

Maize meal, which is locally referred to as mielie/mealie, is mixed with hot water and stired until a porridge like mash is created. It is especially delicious if served with a nice homemade tomato sauce and meat.

Accommodations in Cape Town and hotels in Johannesburg are great jumping off points for most travelers in the region, make sure to touch base with the locals for other great recommendations for quality foods that you might otherwise never get the chance to experience.

Leeds is one of the UK’s best loved cities and in the past few years its popularity has gone through the roof. The success of its universities is partly responsible and a huge influx of young people has pushed the city in all the right directions. There is plenty to do in Leeds. From dusk until dawn you can enjoy some of the best attractions and entertainment the North has to offer. The industrial prestige of the city means that there are some fantastic buildings which house equally brilliant events and exhibitions.

We have provided a rundown of the best ways to spend time in Leeds this summer;

Go Shopping – Leeds is excellent for shopping. It has something for everyone, especially the fashion conscious. The city centre boasts all of the high street brands you would expect to see with the addition of some more obscure independents. If you have a big budget head to the Victoria Quarter. It is one of the best shopping centres in the UK and houses the first Harvey Nichols to be opened outside London.

Visit One of The Many Cultural Attractions – Leeds was one of the centres of the industrial revolution that shaped the modern world. Its wealth during this period was vast and as a result the city is littered with impressive, imposing buildings. Some of the finest architecture is found just outside the city. Temple Newsam House is a highly rated historic house located a few minutes from the city centre. The gardens were created by the much celebrated landscape architect Capability Brown. If you want to stay within the city the Leeds Art Gallery is the perfect way to spend a few hours. This year marks the centenary of Leeds Art Collections Fund so there is plenty on at galleries across the city.

Go on a Night Out – Leeds has one of the largest student populations in the UK, with 2 of the largest universities in the same city! As a result the nightlife offers a lot. There are hundreds of bars spread across the city and the focal point is the city centre. However the student areas are also great for a night out, especially if you’re on a tighter budget.

Watch Some Sport – Leeds has a number of successful sports teams across a range of sports. Cricket, Rugby Union, Rugby League and Football are played professionally in the city (depending on the time of year), so why not pay one of the stadiums a visit?

All of the above is sure to make you peckish. The choice of restaurants is almost endless and the city has every form of cuisine you could imagine. Whether you just want a quick, bite or you’re a discerning diner, the city has it covered. The easiest way of finding what you are after is by visiting TripAdvisor or consulting your trusted guide books.

Leeds has a lot to offer and the city it well worth a visit; it’s called the London of the North for a reason! Type ‘Leeds Tourism’ into Google to find out more about what’s going on in the city this summer and to book any event tickets you may need.

When visiting Leeds stay at The Chambers. Arguably the best Hotel Leeds has to offer, rated the number one in the City on TripAvisor. If you are in the city on business they also offer excellent meeting rooms Leeds.

You are in for the best beach adventure of a lifetime when you go and travel to Florida. It has prepared the best beach entertainment and escapade that will make you crave for more. It has earned a respectable reputation all over the world and those who have experienced it for real all attest to the exciting treats it has to offer.

Siesta Beach

This is a public beach located in Sarasota. It is open from 6:00 am until 11:00 pm with free parking. You are sure to love the fine-grained sand and the crystal green waters of the sea; however, you will find it filled with plenty of people who wish to enjoy the beach as much as you do.

St. George Island State Park

This is the perfect beach site for any family. It is comprised of nine miles of underdeveloped beaches that allows family members to enjoy camping, swimming, fishing, sunbathing, and hiking. It is open all year round from 8 in the morning until sundown. However, you need to leave your car at appropriate parking areas because vehicles are not allowed in the dunes area.

Mattheson Hammock Park Beach

You will be happy to rest your tired body in this man-made lagoon that provides you with regular supply of fresh waters coming from the Biscayne Bay. You will not fear bringing your child in this beach because there are regular lifeguards on duty who will be on watch from 8:30 am until 6:00 pm. However, you have to leave your pets behind because they are prohibited in this area.

Haulover Beach

You may not wish to bring your kids in this beach because of the many nude bathers who come and visit the place for the perfect tan. Reserve it for adult beach experience. It offers shaded picnic facilities, concession stands, beautifully landscaped sand dunes and the perfect sea water that is both ideal for surfing and swimming. Nude bathers will enjoy the privacy in this beach because of the strict guidelines and policies of the management against photography without permission. Nevertheless, this is a no pet zone so just ask someone to take care of your pets while you enjoy the beauty of the beach and the sun in Haulover Beach.

Sunny Isles Beach
