Zanzibar – Stone Town for a Slave Market?

in Africa

Want to visit a city that is blended with Arabic, Indian and African culture and style, plus a little bit of European sense? Or want to sense the air with a heavy scent of cloves?

Zanzibar, a distant island ringed with sparkling, azure seas and impossibly white and empty beach should be one of those interesting places for you to visit and explore! No worries, Zanzibar is low in political coups and high in bliss charged activities though.

Pictures below are some of the places of interest that you may not want to miss should you travel there:

slave market

This is from “The Slave Market and Memorial,” Do you know that the slave trade in Stone Town for some 30 years after it was abolished in 1870 (correct me if I am wrong)?

Dr. Livingstone's house

Dr. Livingstone’s house. It was build for a Sultan and inhabited by many Victorian explorers and missionaries.

The Palace Museum - Sultans sitting room

Sultans’ sitting room from The Palace Museum for the Sultans’ from 1890s to 1964.

peace memorial museum

nasur mohamed dispensary

The Nasur Nurmohamed Dispensary, a beautiful building and cultural centre.

Traveling tip on when is the best time to travel to there? Well this interesting place, Zanzibar with a population of approx. 620,000 is best to visit from September to March.

Frankly there are many outstanding buildings to be seen, and people are saying that these interesting places will leave you with a lot of romantic history and memories though!

Are you tempted to skip these places of interest in favor of the beach?

What does “Do you know that the slave trade in Stone Town for some 30 years after it was abolished in 1870 (correct me if I am wrong)?” mean?

I think it is ironic that Zanzibar has a memorial to peace. But personally I don’t regard peace as dead!

SA Accommodation

A great blog post on the museums of Zanzibar, and some nice pictures as well. There are of course many other areas on Zanzibar which are more beach orientated than Stone Town such as Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje.
